Tax notices, hearings and appeals

We prepare replies, attend hearings and take matters to appeal under income tax, GST, the Companies Act and PF & ESI laws. It is the most demanding part of our work, and the part clients rely on us for most.

How we handle a notice

  1. Read it properly. The provision invoked, the period, the issues raised and the time limit.
  2. Get the facts. Returns, books and documents for the period, reconciled against the department's data.
  3. Draft the reply. Point by point, supported by the law, circulars and relevant decisions, with evidence annexed.
  4. Attend the hearing. Online or in person, in the capacity permitted under the applicable law.
  5. Review the order. Rectification or appeal if the order is not correct.

Before you reply

  • Do not ignore a notice or let the reply date pass. Ask for more time if needed.
  • Do not send a one-line reply. Incomplete replies often lead to adverse orders.
  • Keep copies of everything filed and every acknowledgement.
  • Check whether the same issue affects your other returns.

Frequently asked questions

I received a notice. What should I do first?

Note the reply date, and do not ignore the notice or let the date pass. Send us the notice with your returns for the period. We will tell you what is being asked, what documents are needed and how much time you have.

Can you handle notices from more than one department?

Yes. We handle income tax, GST, Companies Act (ROC) and PF and ESI proceedings, which helps when one issue affects several laws, such as a turnover difference between GST and income tax returns.

What if the order goes against me?

We review the order, advise on rectification where there is an apparent mistake, and prepare an appeal within the time limit where the order is wrong in law or on facts.
