Notices, hearings & appeals
Income tax notices, hearings and appeals
An income tax notice is time-bound, and the first reply often decides the outcome. We read the notice carefully, gather the evidence, file a complete reply on the e-proceedings portal, attend hearings, and take the matter to appeal when an order is not correct in law or on facts.

Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to reply to an income tax notice?
The reply date is stated in the notice and is often short. If more time is needed, an adjournment can be requested through the portal with reasons. Do not let the date pass without a reply or a request.
What is the time limit to file an appeal before the Commissioner (Appeals)?
Generally 30 days from receipt of the order. The Tribunal appeal is generally due within 60 days of the appellate order. Delay can be condoned in some cases with sufficient cause.
Do I have to pay the demand while my appeal is pending?
You can apply for stay of demand. The department usually expects a part-payment of the disputed demand while the appeal is pending, depending on the facts.
Are hearings in person?
Most assessments and first appeals are now faceless and handled online. Personal hearing by video conference can be requested where needed.
Which Act applies to my notice?
Proceedings for years up to 2025-26 continue under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from Tax Year 2026-27 onwards.
